Hamilton named as one of 22 stops on nationwide trophy tour

The ICC Cricket World Cup trophy is about to begin a nationwide tour of New Zealand, with a stop for every one of the 22 years since the tournament was last here in 1992.

Day six of the tour the trophy will be in Hamilton, with an event to be held at Casey’s Garden, Seddon Park from 10.00am to 2.00pm on Tuesday 11 November.

This will feature an interactive exhibition on the history of the tournament, cricket skills challenges, giveaways and the chance to have your free photo with the ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy. Fans are invited to share their photographs on Twitter and Facebook using the hashtags #cwc15 and #cwctrophytour.

Head of New Zealand for ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, Therese Walsh, says the tour is the ideal way to give as many Kiwis as possible a chance to help kick start our biggest ever summer of cricket.

“Cricket is our summer game and a national passion. We will have waited a generation for the return of what has grown to be one of biggest sporting events in the world, and this is the perfect way to show New Zealanders what the tournament is all about."

"For this trophy tour we've designed something really special that I believe will appeal to fans of all ages. Hamilton has got into the spirit of the tournament by embracing the opportunity to be part of the tour, so keep an eye out for our convoy and help us gear up for what will be a fantastic event on 11 November and an amazing summer of cricket."

Mayor Julie Hardaker says Hamilton is delighted to be one of the cities to host the ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy Tour.

“Seddon Park is one of the world’s best boutique cricket grounds, and we’re very excited to be hosting three matches as part of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. It’s only a few months until we host our first match, South Africa vs Zimbabwe, and I’m sure cricket fans from our city and across the region cannot wait for their chance to be part of the action.

“Having the trophy tour make a stop in Hamilton is exciting, and it looks like the team bringing the trophy through town have got some great activities lined up.”

The ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy stands 60cm tall and weighs 13kg.  Made of silver and gold, it was designed and crafted in London by Garrard & Co, who also made the America’s Cup and English Premier League Trophy. The trophy features a golden globe of the world on which all continents are represented. This globe signifies a cricket ball and is held up by three silver columns shaped as stumps and bails. These represent the three fundamentals of cricket: batting, bowling and fielding.
